Hard shell vs. soft shell vs. hybrid

Hard shell tents open in under a minute, sit low and aerodynamic on your roof, and are the most durable — ideal if you camp often and want fast setup. Soft shell tents fold open to give the most sleeping room per dollar and usually add an annex room below. Hybrid (wedge and clamshell) tents split the difference: quick to deploy with a roomy interior. Most hard and hybrid shells sleep 2–3; soft shells scale to 3–4 with an annex.

How many people, and what size?

Pick based on who sleeps up top: solo and 2-person tents are lighter and fit smaller racks, while 3–4 person and XL models need more roof real estate. People sleeping below in an annex don't count toward the tent's capacity.

Mounting: the rack matters

A roof top tent needs a roof rack or bed rack rated to carry it. Watch two numbers: dynamic capacity (what the rack holds while driving) and static capacity (what it holds parked — the one that matters when people are asleep on top). Tell us your vehicle and tent and we'll confirm the right rack.

Hard shells pop up in about 60 seconds; soft shells take a few minutes but pack more tent. For year-round use, look for heavier fabrics and add insulation. Air the tent out before long-term storage to protect the fabric.
